LAAP Season Opening 19 September 2026
As every year, on a sunny Saturday in September, LAAP members gathered to mark the start of the working season.
The gathering began with a visit to the Underground Information Centre in Vievis.
Jungian psychotherapists and psychoanalysts are keen to explore questions of depth psychology, delving into the deepest layers of the unconscious, and on this occasion, we had the opportunity to come into direct contact with the Earth’s depths. The Information Centre stores core samples drilled in Lithuania. A core sample is a cylindrical column of rocks obtained by drilling into the ground with a special hollow drill bit. It is a vertical sample of the Earth’s strata, a sort of ‘tube’ of rock that geologists extract from the depths to find out what lies beneath the ground. The deepest borehole in Lithuania is over 2 kilometres deep!
It is also a time capsule that allows us to read the Earth’s history, climate changes and what the environment was like millions of years ago. For example, coral remains have been found in Lithuania. This means that there was once a warm tropical sea here. But what exactly is ‘here’, if the Baltica continent itself was once in the Southern Hemisphere...
Having touched upon different concepts of the ‘depths’ and been astounded by the scale of time (where a few million years is not really that long), whilst trying to grasp how our land could have belonged to the Southern Hemisphere, we continued our conversations in an informal setting – sharing experiences, ideas and plans for the new LAAP season.
